It is available for spot frequencies in the range 40 – 200MHz, where a typical gain of 26dB can be achieved. If a wider band coverage is required, e.g. the VHF Airband, Marine band or Band II, then a simple modification allows the tuning to be spread, with some loss in gain. The Airband version, covering 118 – 137MHz, has a typical gain of 16dB.
It employs the BF988 MOSFET which has excellent dynamic characteristics.
The power supply can be in the range 9 – 15v with a current drain of 5 – 10mA.
Should a lower gain be required, then the supply can be reduced below 9v; the 0dB point, i.e. zero gain, is around 2v.
A battery or regulated power supply should always be used to reduce mains-borne noise.
Its compact size (34 x 9 x 15mm) means it can usually be fitted inside the receiver, alternatively, it can be built into a small box, such as we use for our packaged products.
Connection to the amplifier is made by flying leads.
